What does the phrase “Father, Son and Holy Spirit” mean in the Biblical sense? The terms “trinity,” “Trinitarian,” “three persons,” and “triune god” are not to be found in the Bible.
Non-Biblical terminology leads to confusion, and confusion can lead to heresy. In order to combat confusion and heresy, let us strive:
- To call Bible things by Bible names
- To speak where the Bible speaks
- To be silent where the Bible is silent
The Bible teaches us no more and no less. The Word of God is truth (John 17:17). Two great, related truth that the Bible reveals:
- The essential Oneness in being of the Hebrew and Christian God
- The complete deity of Jesus Christ as the incarnation of that God
Genesis 1:1 – creation of heaven and earth by one God, the Creator
Deuteronomy 6:4 – one God
Isaiah 45:21 - one God
Isaiah 46:9 – one God

Refuting the Challenge
This is a kind of “literary plural” (using “we” for “I”), considering that God is quoted as the One speaking (hence the plural) and it is a device used by speakers and writers in all languages. The next verse, Genesis 1:27, God is not speaking (hence the singular). | The use of the plural (Genesis 1:26; 11:7) is the Hebrew idiomatic expression of expressing deliberation, or it is the plural of Majesty, royal commands being conveyed in the first person plural. |
